Paul, London '07

Another Paul in the family, my brother this time. I've been meaning to draw him for years! After doing the outline, I copied it in case the colour pencils didn't work out but I'm happy with this and compared to graphite, drawing with the Cretacolors is incredibly quick! The coloured pencils seem so natural and instinctive, I wonder why watercolour isn't the same? Now I've scanned this I can see a little more colour might be needed around the mouth (although the scan has dulled the colour slightly) but I'll leave it for a while and look at it afresh in a week or so. This drawing is one of the largest I've done in a while - at 12ins high and it didn't quite fit on the scanner - I dread to think how long it would have taken in graphite.

Cretacolor Aqua Monoliths on Daler Heavyweight (220gsm) cartridge paper.

Felicity, you have done it!! You have , indeed, found your medium! This is fantastic, just gorgeous!! Oh, my, I almost don't know what to say. The first things you showed us done in colored pencil were charming, but this is so powerful. And, on a completely different note, I never in a million years would have predicted that you'd have a brother with dreadlocks. He is so handsome and dashing, I hasten to say, and you are lovely, too---but your styles are very different from each other!

Congratulations, it's fantastic!

LOL! Yes, I thought it would be a surprise! He's an artist too, but he looks like one ;) I knew when I saw this pose, it was the one. Thanks Laura!

Absolutely AMAZING!! I agree with Laura, you have most definitely found your medium!!! Incredible flesh tones and the hair - ohmygoodness, it's not only the texture and colorings, but the hairline is so perfect. You were "spot on" when you picked this pose, and you've captured it flawlessly!!!

It's absolutely gorgeous, Felicity--I LOVE it!! He's a fascinating looking fellow, I'm surprised you HADN'T drawn him sooner...

Oh do, do, DO be careful with it...having it be watercolor pencils but dry makes it vulnerable and it would be a great shame to have anything happen to it!

I had a giggle about your self portrait...I don't hate my signs of aging, for some reason (I guess I'm just lucky!) but I do have trouble drawing all of them. All those wrinkles would make for a very dark drawing, with so many lines! I managed to get the gray fey one WAY too flattering, so frustrating...

I'm so glad you're finding your path with color...you're quite wonderful. And of course it's different with watercolor! Unless you're using a drybrush technique that utilizes thousands of tiny, overlapping strokes, it's a lot less controlled. An entirely different approach!

By the way, Paul has a wonderfully kind, whimsical face...you've really outdone yourself here...

FELICITY!!! DID YOU HEAR ME DROP IN MY TRACKS!!! THIS IS SUPREMELY GORGEMENTOUS!!!! I TRULY EXPECTED HIM TO LEAN OUT OF THE COMPUTER SCREEN AND SHAKE MY HAND!!! TAKE A BOW, CARA, THIS IS TUNNING!!!!

A really great drawing Felicity - although it's partly due to a very nice comp.

I agree with Laura, you seem to hve found your medium. I look forward to seeing more CP drawings.

HOLY -!!!! First thought: "Oh, she's posted a photo." Then I read your post! I'm sitting here gawping like a guppy! This is unbelievable, my friend - you have outdone yourself!

Felicity said...

Thanks everyone - blush!!

Kate, I would have drawn him sooner if he had LET me! Took two years just to get the photo!

Katherine, yes it is the comp and there is hardly any pencil work in the shirt so it's all in the face and hair, a small surface area - which was probably why it was so quick to do!

beautiful drawing. Your brother's rather tastee too ;)

Holy Cow - absolutely amazing!!!

This is just so good! At first, I thought it was a photo. It's amazing not only how you sketched him, but the wonderful use of color.

I cannot imagine how you ever managed to do every, single dreadlock? (not to mention making it look like dreadlocks) I will admit - - you had a fine looking subject!

I will look at your blog often.

Stunning! Wow, Felicity - I don't think I can add much to the chorus of admirers, but this is really so beautiful! The skin tones are absolutely luminous. I wouldn't have guessed you had a brother with 'locks, either!

And did you mean to make a funny with the "dread to think how long" in your last sentence? ;-)

Wow, this is AMAZING. Like Ryan, I thought you'd posted a photo. It's so stunning. The skin tones are perfect. Just perfect. How long exactly have you been using colour pencils? It seems like 5 minutes, and yet you seem to have mastered them already. Perfect.

Very impressive, and I'm totally envious of his hair...

I wouldn´t add a single pigment particle anywhere on this - it is utterly perfect! You are so good at this, it´s almost scary! Wonderful drawing!

Exquisite drawing, generous kudos from me in being able to master a difficult medium and displaying awesome technique.

Felicity - wonderful comp. No question that the technique would be superb. I think this should go full size however. Now there is a challenge for you.

Felicity said...

Wow! Thanks everyone!

Sionwyn, I must tell my brother that! :)

Diahn, wish I could say it was deliberate! I think my brain works in strange ways though!

Andrea, it does feel like 5 mins. I started about three weeks ago, previously I did a flower last year or the year before - seems freaky I know, after using graphite for decades. Maybe I've had a knock on the head or something...!

Detlev, that IS generous coming from a pencil master!

Robin, yes I'd like to do that!

I can't add anything new here - I'm with everyone else - this is an amazing drawing!!!

fantastic!! he sure is handsome...stand out hair!

Oooo what a handsome brother you have! Love the hair. I have a friend with the same sort of hair but in blonde. The drawing is amazing and the addition of colour using the pencils is breathtaking. I think you've found your niche (if you want one that is!)

I particularly like the laughter lines round the eyes, and that delicate downy fuzz of hairs at the edges of the hairline and the beard.

Isn't it great when you find a medium that totally lets your mind connect with the paper. This portrait has come out really relaxed, and captures that shyness in the subject.

Absolutely perfect! the pose is incredible and wonderfully expressive. this is a tour de force! Brava!

Oh this is fantastic, stupendous, oh where is that thesaurus? This is so masterfully done. I can't believe you've only been at this for 3 weeks. The skin tones are so beautiful and the hair, oh man, I can't believe that hair. Everyone else has said everything, but I had to tell you how much I love this drawing.

This is wonderful. Your use of color is amazing.
I just read your comment on Katherine's blog and could not agree with you more! Computers are a HUGE distraction and I'm constantly adjusting my time on it.

Breathtaking! As Laura says, you really have found your medium. I am really looking forward to following your color pencil portraits - please say you'll do more!

Wow Felicty! This is awesome work! Your brother captured in a great pose and the colored pencils did you say? Wow and he is a cutie too :)

I am totally gob-smacked!!! At first I thought it was a photo too....Felicity, you have such amazing talent! Bravo!!

Paul is very handsome and I love the dreadlocks! What style of art does he do?

Felicity said...

Thanks everyone, it's amazing to read all the comments!

Olga, the effect at the edge of the hair is something I did by accident - I was blending with a tortillon to darken the edge of the hair near the face and noticed that soft effect emerge. I like this a lot, it was something I could never get right with the graphite.

Casey, I'll be exploring cp a lot this year, that's for sure! I've always loved shading skin but with cp I'm seeing so many colours too, so much to explore!

Serena, I haven't actually asked him what he calls himself but he's a woodcarver, he sculpts with wood.

Desiree said...

Wow,all I can do is second, third and fourth everyone elses comments. This is breathtaking, wow. I love CP's too but you have taken it to another level.

This is such a nice drawing. I love the composition, the subdued colors, the quiet white of his shirt. Really a great feeling to it!

Linda said...

Well, I just have to say ditto to all the comments. I'm amazed at this piece -- you HAVE finally found your most perfect medium! This is about as perfect a portrait as I have ever seen.

(And, yeah -- bro is a looker!)

I saw your drawing on the Making a Mark blog. Congratulations on your nomination.

Your drawing took my breath away when I saw it. I just wanted to reach out and touch it to make sure it wasn't really a person there. It is beautiful and you had a gorgeous subject to draw. Your brother is quite handsome.
